Trailer: “HEALING HOMES,” recovery from psychosis without medication, Sweden

TRANSCRIPT

In Gothenberg, Sweden, there exists a program, The Family Care Foundation, that aims, as part of its mission, to help people recover from psychosis without medication. I had an idea that I wanted to try together with others to create a place, uh, that should be good for people to stay in, and that was the goal with the organization. And that was the vision. It’s not about the medication; it’s about people.

And people, they place people who have been failed by traditional psychiatry in families, many of whom are farm families in the Swedish countryside, as an opportunity to start a whole new life. Do you think of people with diagnoses? Do you think schizophrenia, bipolar, ADHD, depression?

I didn’t think so at all. No. Do you know about these diagnoses? Little. Very, very, very little. Sometimes I felt that I had every diagnosis in the world.

We have a way of meeting people. We not labeling them or diagnosing them, just meet them and see what they come with and what they want. And I think that’s respectful.

They offer intensive psychotherapy to clients and intensive supervision to the families, and all of their services provided within the context of Swedish socialized medicine are free. So you see people with very serious problems, and they’ve seen them get well, change, and grow.

Yes. Yes. What do you think is the magic? Why do they get well?

You have to have love to help people. If you don’t have love, you cannot help. Is it a magic? No. Is it a magic? I think it is the whole family. It’s very warm inside. Very much love.
