I Never Promised You a Rose Garden—author Joanne Greenberg speaks!

TRANSCRIPT

Of course, I’ve read I Never Promised You a Rose Garden, and I know that well. And I’m just, I don’t know exactly how much that overlapped with your experience and how much that was fictional.

Well, I fictionalized it as a hedge. A hedge meaning I didn’t want to go back there. I fictionalized it by making it her, by giving her different parents and by giving her different symptoms. Mhm. So that, uh, and making the symptoms more organized so that I could distance myself from it.

How was it for you when you first met Joanne Greenberg, who did write I Never Promised You a Rose Garden? You know, um, I never—I never knew what she looked like. I only knew from her writing, but I had such great respect for her from just knowing her book and hearing about her. So when I met her, it was the most awesome experience. I count her as one of those people that I really look up to and respect and admire.
