Peter Breggin clips from film “Take These Broken Wings”

TRANSCRIPT

The key to helping people, the most fundamental thing, is to help them get over feeling helpless. To help them understand they can actually figure things out and make decisions, make choices. Um, and you can’t do that if you’re giving medication because you’re saying to them, “you can’t do it, you need a drug.” And it’s very sad that we don’t have places where people can go and be taken care of, like during the moral era of Psychiatry. And you, during the 1700s and 1800s, when we had hospitals, especially in England, where you could get the kind of treatment that a person like myself or Lauren Mo or, uh, would give gift to somebody who’s really disturbed.
