TRAILER 2: Take These Broken Wings, Recovery from Schizophrenia without Medication

TRANSCRIPT

I started to hear voices when I was 17 years old. Crazy people. Crazy people. Kill yourself. Kill your mother. Kill your sister. Psychopath. Straight jackets and asylum. Psychiatry medication. I totally believe that the devil had taken me over. Something wrong with the person.

At the age of 17, Katherine Penny was diagnosed with schizophrenia. They told my mother mental illness. She needed to realize mental illness. I had an illness. Mental illness that nobody gets well from. Mental illness and she needed to take care of her other children. Severe mental illness.

After being put on various antipsychotic medications, which not only didn’t work but caused severe side effects, Katherine entered a psychiatric hospital where she began daily therapy with Dr. Daniel Dorman. She was so shut down she didn’t even swallow her own saliva. She actually left her mouth open a little bit, and her saliva drooled down all over the front of her dress and dripped in a string off the hem into a puddle on the floor.

Isn’t it much easier to give somebody a pill and get rid of them?

Were you on medication the whole time you were hospitalized?

Dr. Dorman, uh, told my parents when he had a consultation with them that he did not want Kathy to have another crutch. He wanted her to know that when she gets well, she did it herself.
